Itchan Kala

Itchan Kala is the walled inner town of Khiva in Uzbekistan, an exceptionally well-preserved example of a Central Asian fortified city. The enclosed quarter contains a dense cluster of monuments, madrasahs, mosques, palaces and defensive walls dating mainly from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Inside the walls visitors find the Kunya-Ark citadel, the distinctive glazed-tile Kalta-Minor minaret, the hypostyle Juma Mosque and the mausoleum of Pahlavon Mahmud, among other buildings. The compact layout and intact ramparts make Itchan Kala easy to explore on foot, and the mud-brick skyline, wooden-carved doorways and tiled domes attract visitors for architectural study and photography.

Itchan Kala developed as the inner fortified town of Khiva and was the political and religious centre of the Khorezm khanate through the early modern period; its surviving buildings reflect successive phases of construction under local khans. Fortification and structural preservation have kept the ensemble largely intact compared with many other historic urban centres.

The walled quarter sits at the heart of modern Khiva in Uzbekistan’s Khorazm region; its compact area is wholly enclosed by brick walls and is a short walk from the city’s surrounding outer neighbourhoods.

• Kunya-Ark: Kunya-Ark citadel - the historic fortress and administrative complex of the Khivan khans, containing halls and living quarters.
• Kalta-Minor Minaret: Kalta-Minor minaret - an unfinished and conspicuous short, wide minaret covered in blue tilework near the main entrance to the inner town.
• Juma Mosque: Juma Mosque - the Friday mosque of the inner town, known for its hypostyle hall with wooden columns.
• Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum: Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum - a prominent mausoleum and pilgrimage site inside the walled city that is an important religious monument.
