B.C.’s Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park protects volcanic plateaus, alpine meadows and glacial lakes; visitors use horseback trails, backcountry hiking and fishing to explore remote mountain terrain in the Chilcotin Range.
Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park is a provincial park in the central interior of British Columbia that protects two shield-volcano ranges and their surrounding alpine and subalpine ecosystems. The park was created to conserve these volcanic landscapes and the habitats they support.
The area offers remote backcountry opportunities including hiking, horseback riding and wildlife observation, with a landscape dominated by volcanic plateaus, high meadows and ridgelines. Facilities are minimal and most travel is into undeveloped wilderness.
The park is located in the Chilcotin region of central British Columbia and is accessed by logging and forest-service roads from communities on the province’s interior plateau.
- Access and services: Remote access and minimal services mean visitors should be self-sufficient; the area is prized for backcountry hiking, horseback trips and wildlife viewing.
What to See #
- Itcha and Ilgachuz Ranges: The park centers on two volcanic plateaus, the Itcha Range and the Ilgachuz Range, which form the core protected features and offer alpine terrain for backcountry travel.
Tips for Visiting Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park #
- Plan your trip for mid‑July through early September for the best chance of snow‑free access to alpine plateaus and trails.
- Treat the park as true backcountry: access involves long, rough forestry roads (or fly‑in options), there are no services or reliable cell signals, and multi‑day trips require thorough trip plans and navigation skills.
- Hire or consult local outfitters familiar with the Itcha and Ilgachuz ranges-routes and conditions change seasonally and local knowledge dramatically reduces logistical risk.
