Murano
Island Venetian island renowned for centuries-old glassmaking
A short vaporetto ride from Venice, Murano is famed for centuries-old glassmaking. Tourists visit glassblowing workshops and showrooms, the Glass Museum, and narrow canals lined with artisan shops.
Murano is a group of islands in the Venetian Lagoon, north of central Venice, internationally renowned for its centuries-old glassmaking tradition. The island developed as a specialised centre for glass production from the late 1200s and remains associated with high-end glasswork.
Main attractions include working glass furnaces and demonstration ateliers where visitors can observe glassblowing, the Museo del Vetro which documents the craft’s history, and historical churches such as Santi Maria e Donato. Shops and galleries selling glass pieces line the canals.
Glass workshops were concentrated on Murano from the late 13th century under Venetian regulation; the industry continued to evolve with artisan techniques passed down through generations. The island remains a living production centre as well as a cultural and tourist destination.
Murano lies within the Venetian Lagoon and is reached by vaporetto from Venice’s main terminals; it is a short water-bus ride from central Venice and serves as a frequent half-day or day-trip destination for visitors.
- Glassmaking heritage: Glassmaking has been the island's primary industry since the late 13th century, when Venice's glassmakers were moved to Murano to reduce fire risk in the city.
- Access: Murano is served by Venice public water buses (vaporetto) and is a short boat ride north of Venice's main islands, making it a common day-trip from the city.
What to See #
- Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum): A museum dedicated to the island's glassmaking history located in a historic palace, exhibiting glassworks from antiquity to the present and explaining Murano techniques.
- Basilica of Santi Maria e Donato: A Romanesque church on the island notable for its mosaics and medieval architecture, situated near the main canal-side streets.
- Glass workshops and furnaces: Numerous active glass workshops and furnace demonstrations along the island's canals where visitors can watch glassblowing and buy finished pieces.
How to Get to Murano #
Murano is served by Venice’s vaporetto (water bus) network. Regular ACTV vaporetti run from central Venice (Ferrovia/Train Station, Piazzale Roma, and Fondamenta Nuove) to Murano stops; the ride from Fondamente Nuove or Venezia Santa Lucia is typically around 10-20 minutes depending on route and stops. Water taxis are also available.
On arrival the main Murano terminals (e.g., Museo, Colonna) are a short walk from glass factories and the island’s main attractions.
Tips for Visiting Murano #
- Take the vaporetto from Fondamenta Nove or other northern Venice stops and get off at the Museo stop to arrive near the Glass Museum and main artisan workshops.
- Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the daytime crowds from Venice cruise and package tours; small glass studios are quieter then and you'll see artisans at work.
- Walk away from the main canal and the big showrooms-many of Murano's best demonstrations and smaller family-run furnaces are on the side streets and near the Museo del Vetro.
Best Time to Visit Murano #
Visit Murano in spring or early autumn for pleasant weather and fewer tourists; workshops operate year-round but summer is busiest.
