Northwest & the Po Valley (Milan, Turin, Parma, Bologna)
By late winter the air remains crisp but the fog can intermittently lift, revealing Turin’s baroque façades. February often still feels wintry-occasional cold snaps push temperatures near freezing and days are short-though sunnier spells tempt locals outdoors to piazzas and cafés. There is a chance of wet snow or sleet, particularly inland; bring warm layers and waterproof footwear if you plan countryside day trips. Carnival events in nearby towns can brighten shorter days, but alpine resorts make more sense if you want reliable snow.
Northeast & the Adriatic Coast (Venice, Trieste, Rimini)
February still carries winter’s bite, yet it’s Carnival season in Venice, when the city explodes with masks and processions-expect crowds around the main events but empty back streets at dawn. Temperatures are near freezing overnight with daytime highs in single digits; occasional sleet or wet snow is possible inland. The bora can clear skies and create dramatic conditions at Miramare and Trieste’s waterfront; dress in layers and bring windproof outerwear. If visiting the Carnival, buy event tickets and book accommodation well in advance.
The Alps & Dolomites (Aosta, Cortina, Val Gardena, Courmayeur)
February continues as a winter sports hotspot with carnival energy in mountain towns and reliable snow across resort elevations, particularly above 1,200-1,500 m. Days lengthen slightly but it remains cold-daytime slopes often hover around -5 to 5°C depending on altitude-perfect for skiing, snowboarding and winter festivals. Some quieter valleys host local Alpine Carnivals; book lessons and mountain transfers early. If you prefer fewer crowds, weekdays outside school holidays are best; respect avalanche warnings and stay on marked routes.
Tuscany & Central Italy (Florence, Siena, Umbria, Rome, Lazio)
February keeps a cool, changeable character yet daylight grows longer and local towns start preparing for Carnevale, which can be observed in smaller Tuscan and Umbrian towns as well as major cities. Temperatures remain similar to January with occasional colder spells, but sunny afternoons do occur-perfect for wandering Renaissance streets when rain pauses. Hilltop drives require caution in wet conditions and some rural sites may still have winter closures. Bring a mid-weight jacket and plan indoor museum days as backups.
Sardinia & the Tyrrhenian Islands (Sardinia, La Maddalena, Elba)
February remains cool but increasingly pleasant for exploring coastal towns without crowds; daytime highs stay around 12-15°C and wildflowers may start appearing inland. La Maddalena and Elba are quiet and ferry services run regular but less frequent timetables compared with summer-check schedules. This is a good month for birdwatching and archaeology visits, but swimming is generally too cold for most. Bring waterproof layers for occasional storms and comfortable shoes for rocky coastal paths.
Southern Italy & Sicily (Naples, Amalfi Coast, Calabria, Palermo, Catania, Mount Etna)
February keeps a mild, changeable feel; Naples is pleasant for city walking while Sicily’s towns have cool, visitor-friendly days. Carnival festivities are lively in places like Acireale and Viareggio (on the mainland), drawing colourful local crowds-book for weekend events. The risk of strong scirocco winds bringing warm, dusty air from Africa is higher in late winter, occasionally affecting visibility. Bring a light jacket for evenings and plan mountain visits with care if weather systems shift.
