The complex includes a very large main prayer hall designed to hold tens of thousands of worshippers and an iconic minaret rising to a height of 96 meters. The mosque’s scale and its location beside the cathedral make it a focal point for both religious life and civic events in the city.
Commissioned after Indonesian independence and built through the 1960s and 1970s, the mosque was conceived as a national monument to independence and religious tolerance. It has been used continuously for daily prayers, Friday prayers and national religious ceremonies since opening.
