Istanbul Naval Museum
Historical Site Maritime museum housing Ottoman naval artifacts and models
A maritime collection in Istanbul showcasing Ottoman ship models, cannons, navigational instruments and naval paintings. Visitors come to study naval history, see full-scale models and learn about Ottoman and Turkish seafaring traditions.
The Istanbul Naval Museum (Deniz Müzesi) is Turkey’s principal maritime museum on the European shore of Istanbul, in the Beşiktaş district, and houses one of the country’s largest collections of naval artefacts.
Exhibits include historic ship models, naval uniforms, weapons and maps, plus artillery and other items illustrating Ottoman and Republican naval history. Displays are arranged across several galleries that present both small objects and larger maritime equipment.
The collection began in the late Ottoman period and developed through the 20th century with additions from naval archives and donations; it has been reorganised and expanded several times to accommodate new displays and conservation needs.
The museum sits near the Beşiktaş waterfront on the European side of Istanbul, close to ferry and bus connections and within easy driving distance of central districts such as Taksim and Sultanahmet.
- Access: Located close to the Beşiktaş waterfront and ferry terminals, making it easy to combine with other Bosphorus-side visits.
- Visit length: The museum focuses on Ottoman and Republican Turkish naval history; allow 1.5-2 hours for a thorough visit.
