Isola Martana
Island Small island in Lake Bolsena, historic cemetery
Another Lake Bolsena isle reached by boat, visited for stone ruins, quiet harbours and quick photographic circuits around the lake.
Isola Martana is the smaller of the two main islands in Lake Bolsena in Lazio, Italy. It forms one of the lake’s principal insular features alongside Isola Bisentina.
The island is compact and typically visited for short walks, shoreline views, and as part of boat tours that stop at both lake islands. Facilities are minimal and visits are generally brief due to limited area and infrastructure.
The island has been associated with local settlement and defensive uses in past centuries, with its role and ownership changing over time. Specific historical structures on the island reflect those varied uses but have been modified across different eras.
It sits close to Lake Bolsena’s eastern shore near the town of Marta, about 100 km north of Rome, and is accessed by boat from nearby lakeside towns.
- Relative size and access: Smaller than Isola Bisentina and best visited as part of a short boat trip combining both lake islands.
- Nearest town: Located close to the town of Marta on Lake Bolsena's eastern shore; access is by private boat from nearby towns.
