Isle Royale
Island Remote Lake Superior island national park with wolves
Isle Royale National Park sits in Lake Superior, accessible by ferry or seaplane. People visit for backcountry hiking, canoeing between inland lakes, freshwater diving on wrecks, and the island’s moose-and-wolf ecology.
Isle Royale is the largest island in Lake Superior and the core landmass of Isle Royale National Park, administered by the U.S. National Park Service. The island and surrounding waters are protected for their remote wilderness character, wildlife and recreational trails.
Popular activities include multi-day hiking on the island’s long trails, paddling along rocky shorelines, and wildlife viewing for moose and wolves in their natural habitats. The park is sparsely developed with a small number of visitor facilities at gateways such as Rock Harbor on the east and Windigo on the west.
The park contains a network of backcountry campsites and a single long ridge trail that runs along the island’s spine, providing route options from day hikes to week-long treks. Visitor use is seasonal and access is primarily by ferry or seaplane from mainland departure points.
Isle Royale lies in the northwest portion of Lake Superior, closer to Minnesota and the Canadian shore than to the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It is accessed by boat or air from the U.S. mainland and sits within Michigan state jurisdiction as a national park unit.
- Access seasonality: Most access is by scheduled ferry or seaplane from Michigan and Minnesota during the summer season; services are limited outside late spring to early fall.
- Permits and camping: The island is managed as a national park with backcountry camping permits required for overnight stays on trails and at campgrounds.
What to See #
- Rock Harbor: Rock Harbor - the primary eastern gateway with a visitor center, boat docks and trailheads for the Greenstone Ridge Trail.
- Windigo: Windigo - the main western entrance with docks, campgrounds and access to western trails and boat services.
- Greenstone Ridge Trail: Greenstone Ridge Trail - a long backbone trail running roughly the island's length, about 43 miles (70 km), linking major campsites and viewpoints.
- Mount Desor: Mount Desor - the island's highest point, offering panoramic views from inland ridges and the Greenstone Ridge.
How to Get to Isle Royale #
Isle Royale National Park is island-access only. Seasonally scheduled ferries sail to Isle Royale from Houghton, Michigan (the NPS vessel Ranger III) and from Grand Portage, Minnesota (Isle Royale Queen IV); there are also seasonal seaplane services out of nearby towns. Ferries land at park points such as Rock Harbor or Windigo; plan travel around the seasonal ferry/air schedules and note crossings can take several hours.
Tips for Visiting Isle Royale #
- Isle Royale is accessible only by ferry or seaplane and has a short, seasonal window of regular service-reserve your ferry or seaplane seats well in advance for summer travel (mid‑June to early September) to guarantee a spot.
- To avoid the busiest areas around Rock Harbor, start hikes from Windigo or plan longer backcountry routes; campsites require permits, so book them ahead and spread routes across different zones to escape concentrated day‑hiker traffic.
- If you want fewer people, aim for weekday crossings and consider arriving on the earlier or later ferry of the day; remote shoreline and canoe routes tend to remain much quieter than the main harbors.
Best Time to Visit Isle Royale #
Visit Isle Royale in summer (June-September) for reliable ferry service, open campsites and the best conditions for hiking and boating; fall offers quieter visits but fewer services.
