Isle of Thanet

The Isle of Thanet is a peninsula on the northeast coast of Kent, England, historically treated as an island because the Wantsum Channel once separated it from the mainland. Today it contains several coastal towns and holiday resorts.

The area includes multiple seaside towns such as Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs, offering sandy beaches, promenades and maritime heritage. Visitors come for beach recreation, coastal walks and historic harbour areas.

In the early medieval period the Wantsum Channel made Thanet an island; over centuries the channel silted and the land connection was re-established. From the 18th and 19th centuries the coastal towns developed as seaside resorts.

Thanet sits on Kent’s northeastern tip facing the North Sea, forming the county’s easternmost coastal district and connected to the Kent mainland.
