Isle of Noss

The Isle of Noss is an uninhabited island off the east coast of mainland Shetland that is managed as an important seabird breeding site. It is noted for steep cliffs, ledges and large colonies of Atlantic seabirds.

Visitors typically approach on wildlife boat trips from nearby islands or Lerwick to view the cliffs and birdlife; there are no visitor facilities on the island itself and landings are limited. The island’s primary interest is its seabird colonies and coastal geology rather than built attractions.

Historically the island supported small seasonal occupancy but has long been valued for its wildlife; conservation management has focused on protecting breeding birds and their cliff habitats. Some restricted visitor access is organised to prevent disturbance.

The island lies off the east coast of Shetland, close to the island of Bressay and within reach of Lerwick by a short coastal crossing; it sits in exposed North Atlantic waters with steep shoreline cliffs.
