The Isle of Bute is an island in the Firth of Clyde off the west coast of Scotland, within the council area of Argyll and Bute. It has a mix of coastal towns, country estates and wooded interior hills and is a well established day-trip and short-stay destination from the mainland.

Principal attractions include the town of Rothesay, the medieval Rothesay Castle on the waterfront, and the neo-Gothic country house Mount Stuart with its ornamental interiors and gardens. The island also offers beaches, coastal walks and woodland routes used for outdoor recreation.

Historically the island developed as a Victorian seaside resort and as the seat of local landed families; many of the island’s notable buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The island is served by regular ferries from Wemyss Bay on the mainland and has road links that circle the island.

Bute’s landscape is a combination of low hills, agricultural land and sheltered bays that make it accessible for short trips from Glasgow and the surrounding region.

  • Ferry: Regular vehicle and passenger ferries operate from Wemyss Bay on the mainland to Rothesay, with crossings of roughly 30 to 40 minutes depending on service.
  • Landscape: The island combines wooded hills and sandy bays and is a popular short-break destination from the Scottish mainland, known for country houses and coastal scenery.

What to See #

  • Rothesay: Rothesay is the island's main town and ferry terminal, with Victorian-era seafront buildings and access to local services and attractions.
  • Mount Stuart: Mount Stuart is a 19th century Gothic revival country house and estate on the island, noted for its ornate interiors, chapel and gardens.
  • Rothesay Castle: Rothesay Castle is a medieval fortress on the waterfront in Rothesay with visible medieval masonry and later alterations.

The Rothesay ferry terminal is a short walk into the town centre.

Tips for Visiting Isle of Bute #

  • Use the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay and catch an early sailing to beat day‑tripper crowds from Glasgow; the ferry terminal in Rothesay places you within easy walking distance of the main town.
  • Buy tickets or check sailings in advance during summer weekends, when services fill quickly, and then head inland or to the island's west coast for quieter beaches and walks that many visitors don't explore.
  • If you plan to visit Mount Stuart, allow a half‑day and book entry times ahead in high season-many visitors confine themselves to Rothesay and miss the estate's gardens and architecture.
