The Isle of Bute is an island in the Firth of Clyde off the west coast of Scotland, within the council area of Argyll and Bute. It has a mix of coastal towns, country estates and wooded interior hills and is a well established day-trip and short-stay destination from the mainland.
Principal attractions include the town of Rothesay, the medieval Rothesay Castle on the waterfront, and the neo-Gothic country house Mount Stuart with its ornamental interiors and gardens. The island also offers beaches, coastal walks and woodland routes used for outdoor recreation.
Historically the island developed as a Victorian seaside resort and as the seat of local landed families; many of the island’s notable buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The island is served by regular ferries from Wemyss Bay on the mainland and has road links that circle the island.
Bute’s landscape is a combination of low hills, agricultural land and sheltered bays that make it accessible for short trips from Glasgow and the surrounding region.
