Islands of Four Mountains

The Islands of Four Mountains are a small group of volcanic islands in the central Aleutian archipelago of Alaska, forming part of the Aleutian volcanic arc. The group is noted for steep volcanic cones, sparse vegetation and very low human presence.

The islands are remote and visited mainly by researchers and specialized wildlife or expedition trips; there are no regular ferry services or visitor infrastructure. The landscape is dominated by volcanic cones rising directly from the sea, cliffs used by seabirds and rocky shorelines that attract marine mammals.

The islands are volcanic in origin and were formed over millions of years as part of the Aleutian subduction zone. They lie within the traditional territory of the Unangax̂ (Aleut) people and have been intermittently used for hunting and fishing, but they have no significant long-term settlements.

The group sits in the central Aleutians, roughly 240 km (about 150 miles) west-southwest of Unalaska (Dutch Harbor). The islands are exposed to North Pacific weather and oceanic conditions and lie between larger islands of the Aleutian chain.
