Island Davaar
Island Tidal island near Campbeltown with a lighthouse
Tidal island off Scotland reachable at low tide via a sand spit; known for a cave with a 19th‑century crucifixion painting. Walks, birdwatching and coastal views draw visitors.
Davaar Island is a small tidal island off the Kintyre peninsula near Campbeltown in Scotland. It is best known for a painted mural of the Crucifixion on a cave wall created in the late 19th century.
Accessible on foot at low tide via a sand and shingle causeway, the island offers short coastal walks, seabird watching and the cliffside cave containing the mural. The shoreline and headlands provide panoramic views over Kilbrannan Sound and back to Campbeltown.
The island has traditionally been used for grazing and local fishing. The cave painting was created in the late 1800s and has since been the island’s main cultural feature, with occasional restoration and visitor interest.
Davaar sits at the entrance to Campbeltown Loch, just off the Kintyre coast of Argyll and Bute, a short distance from the town of Campbeltown.
- Tidal access: Cross the causeway only at low tide and check local tide times before attempting the walk; the channel can be dangerous at rising tide.
- Crucifixion mural: The mural inside the cave dates to the late 19th century and can be dark and slippery underfoot, so wear stout footwear and bring a torch.
- Best viewpoint: A short climb on the island gives clear views across Kilbrannan Sound toward the Kintyre coast and the town of Campbeltown.
What to See #
- Crucifixion Cave: Contains a cave on the island's south side that holds a large painted mural of the Crucifixion on the rock wall, visible from inside the cave at low tide.
- Tidal causeway: A sand and shingle causeway that is exposed at low tide and provides the only safe pedestrian connection to the island; crossing times vary with the tidal cycle.
