Isla Espíritu Santo
Island Gulf of California island with rich marine biodiversity
Island in the Gulf of California off La Paz, known for sandy coves and sea‑lion colonies. Tourists arrive for snorkeling, day cruises and camping on sheltered beaches.
Isla Espíritu Santo is an uninhabited island in the Gulf of California off the coast of La Paz in Baja California Sur, Mexico, and is the largest island in the Espíritu Santo archipelago. It is recognized for its marine biodiversity and conservation value as part of the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California UNESCO site.
Clear waters, rocky reefs and sheltered bays make the island and nearby islets a popular destination for snorkeling, kayaking and wildlife watching; organized day trips from La Paz commonly visit sea lion colonies and snorkeling sites. One well-known nearby group of islets hosts a dense colony of sea lions that is easily observed from small boats and in-water snorkel tours.
The islands were designated for conservation as part of regional protected-area initiatives and were inscribed in the UNESCO listing for the Gulf of California in 2005. Conservation measures restrict development on the islands and regulate visitor activities to protect marine and terrestrial habitats.
The island sits in the central part of the Gulf of California roughly off the eastern shore of the Baja California peninsula, and is reached by boat from La Paz. The archipelago consists of the main island and multiple smaller islets; the nearest major settlement is the city of La Paz on the mainland coast.
- Protection status: Part of the Espíritu Santo archipelago and included within the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California UNESCO site, offering protected marine habitats and clear waters for snorkeling.
- Access: Most visits are day trips from La Paz; boat rides typically take about 30 to 60 minutes depending on departure point and sea conditions.
What to See #
- Los Islotes (sea lion islets): A small cluster of islets southeast of the main island that hosts a year-round colony of California sea lions and is a popular snorkeling stop for organized tours.
- Beaches and snorkeling coves: Several shallow bays and beaches on the island provide snorkeling entry points and landing beaches used by day-trip operators based in La Paz.
How to Get to Isla Espíritu Santo #
Most visitors take licensed boat tours from Marina de La Paz (Paseo Álvaro Obregón). The crossing takes about 30-60 minutes depending on the landing. Private pangas can be chartered for half- or full-day trips; check that the operator is registered with CONANP. Larger yachts and private boats also visit but must comply with regulated landing zones and conservation rules.
