Isla de la Juventud
Island Cuba's second-largest island with naval and penal history
Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) offers quiet beaches, scuba diving spots and colonial-era ruins; the special municipality draws visitors interested in diving, small-town Cuban life and offshore coral formations.
Isla de la Juventud is the largest of Cuba’s smaller islands and the second-largest Cuban island after the main island of Cuba. It is an administrative municipality with towns, agricultural zones and coastal settlements, historically known as the Isle of Pines until its 1978 renaming.
The island contains the municipal capital and port of Nueva Gerona and a mix of beaches, low hills and agricultural land. It has had varied uses over time, including as a site for penal institutions and international settlements in the 20th century; some historic sites are open to visitors.
Colonial and republican-era developments, 20th-century prisons and modern municipal infrastructure have shaped the island’s evolution into a regional centre for fisheries, agriculture and limited tourism.
Isla de la Juventud lies off Cuba’s southern coast in the western Caribbean, south of the main island, and is accessible by ferry and air links from mainland Cuba.
- Name change: Renamed from the Isle of Pines to Isla de la Juventud in 1978 as part of administrative reforms.
What to See #
- Nueva Gerona: A municipal centre and port town that serves as the island's administrative and economic hub.
- Presidio Modelo: A former prison complex built in the early 20th century, now preserved as a historical site and museum connected with the island's 20th-century history.
How to Get to Isla de la Juventud #
Isla de la Juventud (Nueva Gerona) is reached by regular ferry services from the port of Batabanó (south of Havana) to Nueva Gerona; the ferry crossing is the conventional sea link. There are also domestic flights to Nueva Gerona’s airport from Havana offered by Cuba’s domestic airlines.
On the island the main town Nueva Gerona is the arrival point and from there roads and local transport connect to beaches and sites across Isla de la Juventud.
Tips for Visiting Isla de la Juventud #
- Check ferry and flight schedules in advance before traveling to Isla de la Juventud and book early when possible; the island's connections (ferry from Batabanó and domestic flights) can have limited seats and changeable timetables.
- Base yourself in Nueva Gerona to access the main museums (including the Presidio Modelo) and use bicycle or scooter rentals to explore the island's beaches and coves - public transport on the island is limited, so self-directed transport helps reach lesser-visited spots.
- If you want quieter beaches, head away from the main town to Punta Francés and other southern shores; many visitors concentrate around Nueva Gerona and miss the island's more secluded coastal stretches.
