Isin is an ancient Sumerian city-state in southern Mesopotamia, prominent during the early second millennium BCE Isin-Larsa period. It survives today as an archaeological mound in modern Iraq, representing one of the city-states that followed the collapse of the Ur III polity.
The site consists primarily of earthen mounds and surface ruins rather than standing monuments; archaeology has recovered inscribed material and administrative remains that document urban administration and kingship. There is no large visitor infrastructure at the mound itself.
The city rose to political prominence after the fall of Ur and was ruled by the dynasty often called the Isin dynasty in the early second millennium BCE. Texts from the site record rulers, legal and economic activity, and Isin’s rivalry with nearby centers during the Isin-Larsa period.
The mound sits in south-central Iraq in Al-Qadisiyyah Governorate, roughly south of Baghdad in the broad alluvial plain of Mesopotamia. The site is in a rural landscape of irrigated fields and other dispersed archaeological mounds.

Best visited in the cooler months (autumn through spring) to avoid Iraq's extreme summer heat when exploring open archaeological sites.
