ISimangaliso Wetland Park is a large UNESCO World Heritage Site on South Africa’s KwaZulu‑Natal coast that protects an exceptionally diverse set of ecosystems including estuaries, coastal dunes, wetlands, lakes, grasslands and coral reefs. The protected area links terrestrial and marine environments and supports significant populations of large mammals, coastal birds and marine species.

Key attractions span the St Lucia estuary and wetlands, the coral reefs and diving sites off Sodwana Bay, the interconnected lakes and traditional fisheries of Kosi Bay, and protected beaches such as Cape Vidal that are important for sea turtle nesting. The park’s mosaic of habitats and long coastal stretch make it important for conservation of both land and sea species.

The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 for its outstanding natural values. Management combines conservation, low‑impact tourism and community involvement across a landscape that stretches along the northeastern KwaZulu‑Natal coast.

Geographically the park occupies the northeastern coast of KwaZulu‑Natal; main access points are the towns of St Lucia and Hluhluwe, and the park lies to the north of Durban along the Indian Ocean coastline.

  • Scale and travel: The park covers a very large area of coastal and inland habitats and is best explored by choosing a specific sector such as St Lucia, Sodwana Bay or Kosi Bay; internal travel distances can be long.
  • Main wildlife draws: Sodwana Bay is a world‑class diving area while the St Lucia estuary is prime for boat and bird‑watching tours; sea turtle nesting is seasonal and most visible at night with guided patrols.

What to See #

  • St Lucia estuary and wetlands: The St Lucia estuary system, a large coastal lagoon complex that supports hippos, crocodiles and extensive wetland birdlife and forms the core freshwater habitat within the park.
  • Sodwana Bay and coral reefs: Sodwana Bay marine area and coral reef sites that are renowned for scuba diving, seasonal whale and turtle sightings and high marine biodiversity.
  • Kosi Bay complex: The Kosi Bay lakes and estuaries in the northern sector, noted for traditional fishing practices, interconnected lakes and significant birdlife.
  • Cape Vidal and coastal reserves: Coastal reserves and beaches such as Cape Vidal that provide marine access and turtle‑nesting beaches inside the park boundaries.

How to Get to ISimangaliso Wetland Park #

iSimangaliso Wetland Park is most commonly reached by road via the town of St Lucia on the KwaZulu‑Natal coast. From Durban drive north on the N2 and turn onto the R22 toward St Lucia (roughly a 250 km drive, about 3 hours); park access points and visitor facilities are reached from the R22 and from St Lucia by short local drives. The park covers a very large area, so once in St Lucia you will usually need a car or a park transfer to reach specific reserves, beaches or trailheads.

Tips for Visiting ISimangaliso Wetland Park #

  • Plan St. Lucia as your base: most wildlife boat cruises and estuary viewing depart from St. Lucia town/harbour in the south of the park-book an early-morning cruise there for the best chance to see hippos, crocodiles and rookery birds before the heat and tour-group arrivals.
  • If you want beaches or reefs, use the clearly signed park gates rather than trying to cross between sections-the Cape Vidal gate is the usual access for the northern beaches and the Sodwana area has its own entry and local dive operators; arrange snorkeling/diving with a licensed operator in advance to secure guides and any required local permissions.
  • Avoid the busiest midday hours and public holiday weekends by visiting midweek or late afternoon; also allow travel time between the park's widely separated zones (St. Lucia estuary, Maputaland beaches, Sodwana reefs) rather than assuming they are a short drive apart.
