Isiboro Sécure National Park and Indigenous Territory

Isiboro Sécure National Park and Indigenous Territory (commonly known by its Spanish acronym TIPNIS) is a combined protected area and indigenous territory in the central Bolivian Amazon. It protects tropical lowland rainforest, river systems and the customary territories of several indigenous peoples.

The area contains diverse Amazonian habitats, rivers and floodplain forests and is important for biodiversity, watershed protection and indigenous livelihoods. It is legally both a national park and a recognized indigenous territory, an arrangement that reflects both conservation and indigenous land-rights objectives.

TIPNIS has been the subject of national policy debates and public controversy, especially concerning proposals to build a highway through the park and the implications that infrastructure would have for ecosystems and indigenous communities.

Geographically, the park lies in the central Bolivian lowlands between departments that include sections of Cochabamba and Beni, within the broader Amazon basin northeast of the highlands.

• Indigenous communities: Home to multiple indigenous nations, including Moxeño, Yuracaré and Chimane (Tsimané), who live in and manage parts of the territory within the park.
