Ishigaki Island is part of the Yaeyama group in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, and serves as a regional hub in the southern Ryukyu archipelago. The island is known for coral reefs, subtropical beaches and scenic bays.

Tourist highlights include Kabira Bay, a photogenic cove famous for its turquoise water and displays of cultured black pearls, and several coral-rich snorkeling and diving sites along the island’s coastline. The island is also a gateway for boat services to nearby smaller islands such as Iriomote and Yonaguni.

Historically part of the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, Ishigaki and the Yaeyama islands were integrated into modern Japan in the 19th century and developed as fishing, farming and maritime communities; tourism has grown in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Located in the southwestern part of Okinawa Prefecture, Ishigaki sits in the East China Sea as part of the Yaeyama archipelago and is administratively distant from the Okinawa main island but connected by regular air and sea services.

  • Kabira Bay access: Kabira Bay is a no-swim scenic area where glass-bottom boat tours operate and where black-lip pearl cultivation is displayed to visitors.

What to See #

  • Kabira Bay: A scenic bay on the northwest coast famed for its emerald waters, black-sand beaches and glass-bottom boat tours; swimming is often restricted due to currents, but the bay is a centre for cultured pearl industry displays.
  • Shiraho reef and beaches: Coastal reef and beaches on the eastern side known for coral diversity and snorkeling; local conservation efforts monitor coral health and manta ray sightings in season.

How to Get to Ishigaki Island #

Ishigaki Island is served by New Ishigaki Airport (ISG) with regular flights from Naha (Okinawa) and other Japanese cities. From the airport take the Yaeyama Bus or a taxi to Ishigaki city/Port (the trip is typically about 30-40 minutes), where the ferry terminal and town centre are within easy walking distance of the bus stops.

Tips for Visiting Ishigaki Island #

  • Fly into New Ishigaki Airport and plan island exploration by car or local rental-public transport is limited and a vehicle lets you reach quieter beaches and viewpoints away from the main tourist hubs.
  • Visit popular spots such as Kabira Bay early in the morning to avoid day‑trip tour buses and to get unobstructed views; for snorkeling and diving, book reputable operators ahead in high season (summer) as spots fill quickly.
  • Use Ishigaki Port for day‑trip ferries to nearby islands (Taketomi, Iriomote) and book those ferry slots early on weekends; many visitors miss quieter inland sights (sugar‑palm groves, local markets) by sticking only to coastal highlights.
