Iriomote Island
Island Subtropical Japanese island with mangroves and wildlife
Iriomote Island’s mangrove rivers and jungle draw kayakers and hikers; visitors take mangrove tours, boat upriver on the Urauchi, snorkel and hope for a glimpse of the rare Iriomote cat.
Iriomote Island is a largely forested island in Okinawa Prefecture’s Yaeyama group, known for dense subtropical jungle, mangrove coasts and endemic wildlife. It is part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and notable for the rare Iriomote cat.
Long inhabited by Ryukyuan communities, the island has been managed for conservation since the national park designation and has small, dispersed settlements that support tourism and local fishing. Conservation measures protect key habitats and restrict development in sensitive areas.
Iriomote lies southwest of Okinawa’s main island group and is reached by ferry or small plane from Ishigaki; local transport on the island is limited and many visitors join organised excursions from the ports.
- Iriomote cat: Home to the critically endangered Iriomote cat, an endemic wild feline that is the island's most famous conservation symbol and is rarely seen in the wild.
- Access: Most visitor access is by ferry from nearby Ishigaki, with local boat operators running river tours and guided treks to waterfalls and mangroves.
What to See #
- Urauchi River and Pinaisara Falls: The Urauchi River and the Pinaisara Falls, the island's best-known river and waterfall, reached by jungle trails and boat tours from coastal villages.
- Mangrove forests and waterways: Extensive mangrove estuaries and tidal waterways that are navigable by small boats and support dense coastal forest and wildlife.
- National park zones: Areas within Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park that protect lowland rainforest, coral reefs and important habitat for endemic species, including strict access controls in some zones.
How to Get to Iriomote Island #
Iriomote Island is reached by ferry from Ishigaki Island. First fly to Ishigaki (from mainland Japan or Okinawa), then take a ferry at Ishigaki Port to one of Iriomote’s ports (commonly Ohara or Uehara); ferry crossings vary by route but typically take on the order of 40-60 minutes. Once ashore there are limited local buses and taxis to reach accommodation and trailheads; schedules are seasonal so check ferry timetables in advance.
Tips for Visiting Iriomote Island #
- Take the earliest ferry from Ishigaki to maximize daylight on Iriomote; most activity (guided mangrove boat trips and hikes to Pinaisara Falls) is scheduled in the morning to avoid afternoon rain and limited daylight.
- Book a licensed guide or an organized tour for Urauchi River, mangrove kayaking and the Pinaisara Falls trek-much of the interior is protected, trails can be confusing and guides know the legal access points and best launch sites.
- If you want quieter experiences, avoid Japanese holiday weeks and weekends; staying overnight on Iriomote (rather than returning same day to Ishigaki) lets you do early- or late-day excursions when day-trippers have gone.
Best Time to Visit Iriomote Island #
Best time is the drier, cooler months (roughly November-April) to avoid heavy rains and the regional typhoon season.
