The Ionian Islands are a group of islands in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of mainland Greece. They are known for a mix of Venetian-influenced architecture, clear waters, and varied coastal landscapes.

Popular islands include Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and Lefkada, each offering beaches, historic towns, and marine activities such as sailing and diving. The islands are a major summer destination for Greek and international tourism.

Historically the islands were influenced by a succession of maritime powers, which shaped local architecture and cultural traditions. Modern transport links include ferries and regional airports that connect the islands with mainland Greece and international visitors.

Geographically the group lies along Greece’s western seaboard in the Ionian Sea, forming part of Greece’s administrative regions for local governance.

  • Location note: The islands lie in the Ionian Sea off Greece's west coast and are distinct from the Aegean island groups in climate and architecture.

How to Get to Ionian Islands #

Most visitors fly into Corfu (CFU) or Kefalonia (EFL) in summer; Corfu has year-round connections to Athens (ATH) and several European cities. Inter-island ferries run from Corfu, Lefkada (via the port of Nydri), Kefalonia (Sami and Poros) and Zakynthos; summer schedules are frequent but check timetables in advance. Car ferries link mainland ports (Igoumenitsa, Patras) to Corfu and Kefalonia, making road-and-ferry itineraries feasible.

Tips for Visiting Ionian Islands #

  • Take the local KTEL buses between the main islands rather than booking multiple flights; ferries are frequent between Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Lefkada in summer.
  • On Zakynthos, go early to Navagio (Shipwreck) Viewpoint before the tour boats arrive-arrive by 8:00am if possible.
  • Rent a scooter on smaller islands (e.g., Kefalonia, Lefkada) to reach remote coves; parking at popular beaches fills by 10:30am in July-August.
  • Taste olive oil on Kefalonia and Corfu: ask for a sample at a taverna and note the peppery finish-locals treat it like wine.
