Inwangsan is a rocky hill in central Seoul, South Korea, rising to about 338 metres and known for its steep rock faces and close urban views. It is a prominent natural landmark immediately north of the old city centre.
The hill is visited for short hikes and panoramic viewpoints across central Seoul, with clear sightlines to the palace district, downtown high-rises and surrounding ridgelines. Walkers encounter exposed rock outcrops, walking paths and cultural sites along the slopes.
Historic sections of the Seoul City Wall run along Inwangsan’s slopes; the wall dates back to the founding of the Joseon capital and parts of it remain intact and walkable. The hill also contains small shrines and rock features associated with local religious practice.
Geographically it lies in the Jongno area of central Seoul, immediately north of the old palace district and within easy reach by public transport from the city centre.

How to Get to Inwangsan #
Inwangsan is in central Seoul above Gyeongbokgung Palace. The easiest public-transit route is Seoul Subway Line 3 to Gyeongbokgung Station; from the station it is a short walk (about 10-20 minutes depending on trailhead) to the lower trails that ascend Inwangsan. Taxis and local buses serving the Jongno/Gyeongbokgung area also drop you close to the park/trail entrances.
Tips for Visiting Inwangsan #
- Hike Inwangsan early morning or at sunset for the best city views and cooler temperatures - the summit offers direct panoramas of central Seoul and Gyeongbokgung area at golden hours.
- Follow the Seoul City Wall trail section over Inwangsan to combine panoramic viewpoints with quieter stretches of the wall; many visitors stick to the lower trails and miss the skyline outlooks from the ridge.
- Start from the Seodaemun/Independence Gate area to reach the main trailheads quickly by public transport; trails are well used, so an earlier start helps avoid weekend crowds.
