Inu Jima is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea off Okayama Prefecture noted for its adaptive reuse of industrial heritage as contemporary art. The island’s best-known site is the repurposed copper refinery ruins that now host an art museum and installations.

The island combines low-density residential buildings, shore paths, and cultural facilities focused on art and heritage interpretation. The former refinery structures form the core of the principal museum and are presented alongside outdoor works and small-scale community spaces.

Historically the island hosted copper-processing activity; in recent years the industrial remains were transformed into a cultural destination as part of regional art initiatives. The island is reached by scheduled ferries from nearby mainland ports and is visited as a day-trip destination within the Seto Inland Sea arts circuit.

  • Access and context: Part of the Seto Inland Sea island cluster known for contemporary art projects and island revitalization initiatives; visitor access is by ferry from mainland ports.
  • Main attraction: The main art venue occupies historic copper refinery ruins repurposed as an exhibition space blending industrial remnants with new architecture and installations.

What to See #

  • Inujima Seirensho Art Museum: A museum housed within converted industrial ruins that interprets the island's former copper refinery through contemporary architectural interventions and art installations.
  • Village and shore paths: Low-density village and shore paths linking the museum, artist installations, and small harbors used by visiting ferries.

How to Get to Inu Jima #

Ferries depart from Himeji (via Kasaoka) and from Uno Port. From Uno Station (on the JR Uno Line), take a short taxi to Uno Port and board the passenger ferry to Inujima; total travel from Okayama city center is roughly 1.5-2 hours by train+ferry. Check local ferry schedules as services vary seasonally.

Tips for Visiting Inu Jima #

  • Take the mid-morning ferry from Himeji or Uno - tides are calmest then and the landing is gentler on Inujima's rocky shores.
  • Buy an Inujima Art Project ticket in advance during the Setouchi Triennale seasons (spring and autumn) - separate access is sometimes limited.
  • Follow the marked path to the Seirensho ruins at a measured pace - many surfaces are reclaimed industrial brick and are slippery when wet.
  • Sit on the eastern bluff at sunset; local fishermen will often idle there and offer tidbits of oral history about the island's copper-smelting days.
