Cusco’s Inti Raymi is a revived version of the Inca winter-solstice rite that honoured Inti, the sun god; today it is a theatrical, community and tourist event combining historical pageantry with local music and dance. The modern reenactment was staged in the 20th century as a cultural revival rather than an unbroken ritual practice.

The atmosphere is loud, colourful and processional: actors in handwoven costumes recreate the royal court, musicians and drummers lead processions through the historic centre, and thousands gather on the steep terraces of Sacsayhuaman for the climax. Expect a mix of staged ceremony and street-level festivities scattered across the historic core of the city.

Inti Raymi takes place every year on 24 June; that fixed date commemorates the Southern Hemisphere winter solstice period, when the original Inca ceremonies were performed. Events begin in the morning with processions through Cusco’s central plazas and culminate around midday at Sacsayhuaman with the main staged ceremony.

The day moves in a clear rhythm: morning parades and local events, a grand procession to the fortress terraces, and the midday dramatic ritual - plan to be in place early to secure a good viewing spot.

Fly into Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco (CUZ) and take a taxi or airport transfer into the city centre (roughly 20 - 30 minutes). The main festival activity is within walking distance of central Cusco but reach the Sacsayhuaman terraces by mid-morning; arrive at least a day earlier to acclimatise to the high altitude and to allow time for tickets and transport arrangements.

• Allow time to acclimatise to Cusco’s high altitude (about 3,400 m); drink plenty of water and avoid heavy exertion on arrival.
• Buy official Sacsayhuaman tickets in advance from recognised sellers or your hotel - seats and terraces sell out and there are limited controlled-access areas.
• Dress in layers for cold mountain mornings and bright sun by midday; bring suncream, sunglasses and a warm jacket for the terraces.
• Wear sturdy shoes for uneven stone terraces and city cobbles; expect steep climbs and crowded viewing areas at Sacsayhuaman.
• Respect performers and rituals: do not push into performance areas, ask before photographing close-up, and follow local stewards’ directions.
• Keep small change and ID handy, and be mindful of pickpockets in dense crowds; organised tours can simplify logistics and seating.
