The Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) is a major research institute in Beijing under the Chinese Academy of Sciences specialising in fossil vertebrates and human evolution. It curates extensive scientific collections and conducts research on dinosaurs, early birds, mammals and hominins.
The IVPP’s collections include internationally significant specimens that have been central to work on feathered dinosaurs, early birds and other vertebrate fossils from China. The institute combines research laboratories, curatorial collections and publication activities.
Founded in the 20th century as China’s principal centre for vertebrate paleontology and paleoanthropology, the IVPP has played a leading role in describing new fossil taxa and in promoting palaeontological fieldwork across China.
