Main image

Inkallaqta is an Inca archaeological complex in the Cochabamba Department of Bolivia, recognised as a regional administrative and ceremonial centre of the Inca state.

The site centers on a large rectangular plaza flanked by long stone halls (kallankas), storage constructions and a raised ceremonial platform often identified as an ushnu. These features illustrate the site’s role in administration, storage and public ritual within Inca territorial organisation.

Inkallaqta was constructed during the period of Inca expansion in the highlands and functioned as a state-controlled centre; like many such sites it declined after the colonial period. Archaeological work has focused on the stone architecture and the layout that reflects imperial planning.

The complex sits on the highland plateau of Cochabamba Department, in a rural area associated administratively with the Arque/Quillacollo zone; the site is reached by regional roads from nearby towns in the department.

  • Structures: The surviving stone buildings include large halls and a raised platform interpreted as an ushnu used for official ceremonies.
  • Visitor note: The site consists of exposed archaeological remains with no extensive visitor infrastructure; allow time for walking between features and uneven ground.

What to See #

  • Main plaza: A large rectangular ceremonial and administrative open area that forms the core of the settlement and was used for public gatherings.
  • Kallankas: Long, vaulted halls typical of Inca architecture interpreted as administrative or residential kallankas adjacent to the plaza.
  • Storehouses and ushnu: Stone storage structures and the raised ceremonial platform used for state rituals and offerings associated with Inca control.
