Inis Cathaigh

Inis Cathaigh (commonly known in English as Scattery Island) is a small island in the Shannon Estuary off County Clare, Ireland, notable for an early medieval monastic settlement founded by Saint Senan in the 6th century.

The island’s principal remains include a prominent freestanding stone round tower, several church ruins and grave slabs that together form a compact archaeological ensemble. Smaller visitor highlights include the shoreline lighthouse and surviving coastal battery structures, and the island’s shoreline is popular for seabird and seal viewing.

The monastic settlement was established in the early medieval period by Saint Senan and developed as a religious centre; the island’s strategic location later led to the construction of coastal defenses and navigational structures in more recent centuries.

Geographically it sits in the outer Shannon Estuary off the Clare coast, a short boat ride from nearby coastal towns in County Clare. The island is tidal and exposed to Atlantic conditions, so access and conditions vary by season.
