Inhotim is a combined contemporary art centre and botanical garden in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil, founded as a private collection that opened to the public in the 2000s. The site is known for large-scale outdoor installations and artist-designed indoor pavilions spread across extensive landscaped grounds.
The programme presents works by international and Brazilian artists in more than twenty indoor pavilions plus numerous outdoor pieces integrated into gardens and lakes. Visitors travel along paths and shuttle routes to reach dispersed installations that range from architectural interventions to monumental sculptures.
Inhotim was developed from a private collection and garden into a public cultural institution during the early 21st century, adding commissioned pavilions and a growing botanical collection over time. Management has focused on combining conservation of plant collections with a programme of contemporary art commissions.
The site lies in Brumadinho, roughly 60 kilometres southwest of Belo Horizonte, set on gently rolling terrain that links cultivated gardens with native forest. Access is normally by road from Belo Horizonte or nearby towns.

How to Get to Inhotim #
Inhotim is located in the municipality of Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, about 60 km (roughly 1-1.5 hours by car) southwest of Belo Horizonte. The fastest way is to drive or take a private transfer from Belo Horizonte; organized day‑shuttle tours and tourist buses also run from Belo Horizonte to Inhotim.
From Brumadinho town center it’s a short taxi ride to the park entrance (around 10-15 minutes). Once at the site, the galleries and gardens are spread out, so expect to walk between pavilions or use the park’s internal shuttles.
Tips for Visiting Inhotim #
- Arrive at opening and plan a clockwise route with the park map - Inhotim is very large and artworks are spread out, so starting early gives you quieter galleries and time for distant pavilions before midday visitors arrive.
- Use the onsite transport options (park shuttles or bicycles) to reach remote pavilions rather than trying to walk the whole circuit; several major installations sit far apart and are easy to miss if you stick to the central lawns.
- Most visitors focus on the headline installations; spend time on the botanical trails and smaller temporary pavilions-these often contain surprising works and quieter views of the gardens that crowds pass by.
