Park Lakeshore state park with sand dunes
Along southern Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes State Park contains beaches, rolling dunes and hiking trails; visitors sunbathe, birdwatch and hike among varied dune habitats.
Indiana Dunes State Park is a state park on the southern shore of Lake Michigan in northwestern Indiana. The park was established in the early 20th century to protect dune and lakeshore habitats and is adjacent to the federally protected Indiana Dunes area.
The park offers sandy Lake Michigan beaches, dune landscapes and a network of hiking trails plus picnic areas and basic visitor facilities. Several trailheads provide short walks onto dune ridges and longer routes through wooded and marsh habitats that lead inland from the lakeshore.
Land was set aside for public recreation and conservation in the 1920s and the area later became linked with the larger federally protected Indiana Dunes region created in the 1960s. Over time the state park has remained a focal point for beach access and public programming while federal protections were added on nearby lands.
The park sits along Lake Michigan in Porter County, near the towns of Chesterton and Michigan City in northwestern Indiana, roughly along the lakeshore between Chicago and Michigan City.
- Best time to visit: Summer is the main season for swimming and beach access, while spring and fall are better for birdwatching and cooler hiking.
- Viewing points: West-facing beaches and dune ridges provide wide views across Lake Michigan at sunset; parking lots near main beaches are the usual access points.
