India Gate is a 20th-century war memorial in central New Delhi, completed in 1931 and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It commemorates soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in World War I and other conflicts.
The central arch stands about 42 metres high and sits on a broad ceremonial avenue known as Rajpath. An eternal flame monument known as the Amar Jawan Jyoti was added under the arch after 1971 to honour Indian armed forces personnel.
Construction began after World War I and the structure was finished in 1931 under the supervision of British architects and engineers. The site has since served as a focus for national ceremonies and public gatherings.
Located in the heart of New Delhi on Rajpath, the monument lies between the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Presidential estate and is easily reached from central Delhi districts.
- Best time to visit: The arch is floodlit at night, making evenings the best time for photos when crowds are slightly lower than daytime.
- Viewing point: Large lawns on either side provide unobstructed views of the monument and are popular for evening walks and picnics.
How to Get to India Gate #
India Gate is on Rajpath in central New Delhi, adjacent to the ceremonial axis that links Rashtrapati Bhavan and the National Stadium. The nearest metro stations are Central Secretariat (Yellow and Violet lines) - about 1-1.5 km west (a 15-20 minute walk) - and Khan Market (Violet line) to the east; both are a short auto/taxi ride from the monument. The site is served by multiple DTC bus routes along Rajpath and Connaught Place.

- Go early morning for a quiet walk on the lawns and unobstructed photos of the arch before daytime traffic and tourist groups arrive.
- Use public transport rather than trying to park nearby; vehicle access around Rajpath can be restricted during events and weekends, making drop-offs and walking often faster.
- Visit again after dark when the monument is lit for a different atmosphere, but be prepared for more local visitors and street vendors at night.
