Independence Hall
Archaeological Site 18th-century Philadelphia building where US Declaration signed
In Philadelphia’s Old City, Independence Hall hosted the Continental Congress and key debates on the Declaration and Constitution; visitors take timed tours, see the Assembly Room and pair the site with the Liberty Bell.
Independence Hall in Philadelphia is the 18th-century statehouse where the Continental Congress met and where the Declaration of Independence and later the United States Constitution were debated and adopted. The building dates to the mid-18th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Constructed in the mid-1700s as the Pennsylvania State House, the building became the meeting place for the Second Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention; the Declaration of Independence was adopted there on July 4, 1776, and the Constitutional Convention met there in 1787. Subsequent centuries saw preservation and restoration efforts to protect the structure as a national historic landmark.
Independence Hall sits on Chestnut Street in the historic district of central Philadelphia, within walking distance of the Delaware River waterfront and major city transport links; the Independence National Historical Park campus organizes visitor flow and services.
- Tours and tickets: Guided ranger-led tours operate from the Independence Visitor Center and include timed access to the Assembly Room; timed tickets are recommended in peak season.
