Independence Gate

The Independence Gate (Dongnimmun) is a stone triumphal gateway in the Seodaemun area of Seoul, erected in the late 19th century as a symbol of Korea’s aspiration for independence. It stands as a national historic monument and a landmark within a commemorative park.

The arch is set at the western edge of a landscaped public area that contains memorials and walking paths. The site is commonly visited together with the neighbouring Seodaemun Prison History Hall, which documents Korea’s independence movement and colonial-era repression.

The gate was built by Korean independence activists at the end of the Joseon period to replace an earlier gate that symbolised diplomatic subservience; it was intended as a visible statement of national autonomy. Over time the structure has been preserved as part of Seoul’s modern urban heritage.

The monument sits in Seodaemun-gu, northwest of central Seoul, within the Seodaemun Independence Park and close to public transport links serving central Seoul.
