Indawgyi Lake is a large freshwater lake in Kachin State in northern Myanmar and is considered one of the region’s most extensive inland lakes. It is important for wetland biodiversity and for the livelihoods of communities on its shores.

The lake supports fisheries, reed beds and wetland habitats that attract a variety of waterbirds and aquatic species. It is commonly used by local villagers for transport, fishing and seasonal harvesting rather than being a heavily developed tourist site.

Conservation measures and local management efforts have focused on balancing resource use with habitat protection, and the area has been the subject of ecological surveys and community-based conservation projects. Human settlement around the lake consists mainly of riverside and lakeshore villages that rely on the lake’s resources.

Geographically, the lake sits in a lowland basin surrounded by forested hills in Kachin State. It is accessed from regional towns and is located inland from Myanmar’s northeastern border areas.

  • Regional importance: Recognized as one of Southeast Asia's larger inland freshwater lakes and an important wetland for local fisheries and birdlife.
  • Local use: Surrounding villages and seasonal fishing make the lake an active resource for nearby communities, with boat access common for local transport and fishing.
