Imbros, officially Gökçeada, is an island in the northern Aegean Sea administered as part of Çanakkale Province, Turkey. It is the largest Turkish island in the Aegean and is known for a mix of Turkish and Greek cultural heritage.

Beaches, sheltered bays and windy coastal stretches attract windsurfers and swimmers, while rural villages and stone-built settlements offer quiet cultural visits and local food. Road loops, short hikes and day trips from the main ferry port are common ways to see the island’s coastline and interior.

The island has an ancient and layered history of Greek settlement followed by Ottoman and modern Turkish administration; it was known as Imbros in classical and medieval sources and later became Gökçeada under Turkish administration. Over the 20th century the island’s demographics and governance changed, but many traditional villages and churches remain.

Geographically the island sits off the west coast of the Gallipoli peninsula in the northern Aegean. Ferries connect it to the Turkish mainland; the landscape combines low mountains, olive groves and coastal plains.

  • Names: Officially known as Gökçeada in Turkey; the island is also commonly called Imbros in historical and international sources.

What to See #

  • Gökçeada town (Merkez): The island's main settlement and administrative centre, located on the sheltered eastern side and serving ferry traffic and local services.
  • Tepeköy (Zeytinli): One of several traditional villages noted for stone houses and a mixed Greek-Turkish cultural heritage; located inland at higher elevation.
  • Aydıncık beach: A stretch of beaches and coastal dunes popular with windsurfers and swimmers on the island's southern shore.
