Illampu is a high peak of the Cordillera Real in Bolivia with an elevation of about 6,368 metres, making it one of the range’s principal summits. It is a heavily glaciated mountain known for steep faces and sustained alpine routes.
Mountaineers come for technically demanding climbs on steep mixed ice and rock routes and for glaciated ridges that require roped glacier travel. The mountain is noted for long approaches from base valleys and for panoramic views of nearby peaks in the Cordillera Real.
Illampu is part of the Andean Cordillera Real massif and has been a focus of alpine exploration since the early 20th century; it remains an important objective in Bolivian high-mountain climbing. No political or built history applies beyond its geological formation and climbing history.
Illampu lies in the La Paz Department of Bolivia, within the Cordillera Real. The town of Sorata serves as the common approach and staging point for expeditions into the massif.
- Climbing difficulty: Climbs are technical and glaciated; parties should be prepared for steep ice and rock routes and bring appropriate equipment and experience.
- Climbing season: Best climbing season is during the Andean dry months, generally the austral winter and spring (roughly May to September), when weather is more stable.
