Ilhéu das Rolas

Ilhe9u das Rolas is a small islet off the southern tip of São Tome9 Island in São Tome9 and Predncipe; it is notable for lying on the Equator. The islet is compact and sparsely settled, and it functions mainly as a local tourist destination and day-trip stop.

A concrete Equator marker is the most visited feature and a common photo spot. The islet has short sandy beaches, nearshore reef areas for swimming and snorkeling, and a few small guesthouses and a resort that provide basic visitor services. Activities are typically short visits, beach time and simple guided demonstrations at the Equator marker.

Administratively part of São Tome9 Province, the islet was occupied and used during the colonial period as part of the Portuguese colony and became part of independent São Tome9 and Predncipe in 1975. Local economy has long been based on small-scale tourism and subsistence activities.

Geographically it sits almost on 0° latitude immediately south of São Tome9 Island’s southern coast; access is by small boat from the southern landing points on São Tome9. The islet’s terrain is low and coastal, with short beaches and rocky shorelines.

• On the Equator: Located almost exactly on the Equator, so solar noon and star positions are used by visitors for simple demonstrations of latitude.
• Boat access: Short boat transfers connect the islet to the southern tip of São Tomé Island; schedules depend on tides and local operators.
