Ilha do Mel is a small, largely undeveloped island off the coast of Paraná state in southern Brazil, inside the bay area near the port of Paranaguá. The island is noted for its beaches, trails, a historic lighthouse and a low-density, low-impact visitor infrastructure.

Beaches such as Praia do Farol and Praia de Encantadas attract most visitors, and a mix of sandy shores, rocky outcrops and short footpaths link the island’s main points of interest. The island enforces restrictions on cars and large-scale development to protect natural habitats and the visitor experience.

Historically the island supported fishing communities and limited fortifications; in modern times it has been managed for conservation and regulated tourism with small guesthouses and local businesses concentrated in a few villages. Visitor services are centred on a couple of settlements and the island is used primarily for day trips and short stays.

Ilha do Mel sits in Paranaguá Bay off the coast of Paraná and is reached by ferry from the coastal ports of Pontal do Sul and Paranaguá. It is part of the coastal municipality network of Paraná and lies within the tropical-subtropical coastal zone of southern Brazil.

  • No-car policy: Motor vehicles are widely restricted or prohibited on the island, so most movement is on foot or by bicycle and local boats, which preserves a low-impact visitor environment.
  • Access and facilities: Access is by regular ferry from the mainland ports of Pontal do Sul and Paranaguá; services and facilities on the island are limited outside the main villages, so bring essentials for day trips.

What to See #

  • Nova Brasília (main village): The historic village of Nova Brasília and small settlements provide the island's guesthouses, restaurants and basic services for visitors.
  • Farol das Conchas (lighthouse): Farol das Conchas lighthouse sits on the island's northern headland and is a prominent navigational and photographic landmark for visitors exploring the beaches.
  • Main beaches and trails: Beaches such as Praia do Farol and Praia de Encantadas are the main recreational areas, with trails linking dunes, rocky headlands and small coves.
