Ilha de Boipeba is an island off the coast of Bahia in northeastern Brazil, within the municipality of Cairu. It is known for Atlantic forest, beaches and low-density coastal settlements.

Beaches, mangroves and patches of coastal rainforest form the island’s main attractions, with several small villages offering guesthouses and basic services. Popular shoreline sites include sheltered bays and natural tidal pools used for swimming and snorkeling.

The island has a coastal Brazilian colonial history tied to the larger Bay of All Saints region, and in recent decades its economy has shifted toward small-scale tourism and fishing while retaining traditional community life.

Located off the southern coast of Bahia, Ilha de Boipeba sits near the larger island of Tinharé and is part of the Cairu archipelago in northeastern Brazil.

• No cars: Motor vehicles are largely absent on the island; travel is mainly on foot, by boat or by mule in some areas.
• Access: Access is by boat from the mainland or nearby islands, with most visitors arriving by regional boat services rather than by road.

What to See#

• Velha Boipeba: The island’s principal village and historic port; a low-density settlement of pousadas, cafes and small shops that acts as the main arrival point for visitors.
• Moreré: A coastal village and beach area known for calm waters, tide pools and access to nearby reefs and mangroves at low tide; a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling when tides are favourable.

From Salvador take a bus or private transfer to the port town of Valença (roughly 3-4 hours by road), then a scheduled boat or water taxi to Boipeba village (around 30-70 minutes depending on the route). Some travellers use flights or fast boats via Morro de São Paulo plus local transfers; schedules vary by season.

• Arrive via Valença and then by local boat to Velha Boipeba - the village is the island's hub for transfers, restaurants and pousadas.
• Moreré and Cueira beaches are calmer and better for swimming; tidal channels can be strong so ask locals about currents.
• There are virtually no cars on Boipeba - travel by foot, bicycle or horse cart and plan extra time to cross the island.
