Île Saint-Louis

Île Saint-Louis is a small, inhabited island in the Seine at the heart of Paris, adjacent to Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement. It is noted for its compact 17th-century urban fabric of stone townhouses and narrow streets and has been mainly residential since its construction.

The island’s main attractions are its riverside quays, historic façades and a handful of long-standing cafes and shops that serve both residents and visitors. It is prized as a quieter, walkable part of central Paris with straightforward access to the major monuments on the Île de la Cité and the Rive Gauche and Rive Droite.

The island was built up in the 17th century on former islets in the Seine and retains much of that period street plan and building stock. Its compact size means most visits are on foot and focused on the main street, quays and the parish church.

Île Saint-Louis sits in central Paris between the two river banks and immediately east of Île de la Cité; it is in the city centre and easily reached from nearby metro stations and pedestrian bridges.
