Il Redentore is a votive church on the island of Giudecca in Venice designed by Andrea Palladio and built between 1577 and 1592 after the 1576 plague. It is a principal example of Palladian architecture in Venice.
The church’s classical façade, centralized interior and sculptural altarpieces are architectural highlights; its riverside position on Giudecca gives clear views across the Giudecca Canal to the rest of Venice. The annual Festa del Redentore draws large crowds who cross a temporary pontoon bridge to reach the island.
Commissioned as a votive offering after the 1576 plague, construction began to designs by Andrea Palladio in 1577 and the church was completed and consecrated in 1592. It has remained an important liturgical and civic landmark in Venice.
Il Redentore stands on Giudecca island facing the Giudecca Canal, a short boat ride or seasonal pedestrian crossing from central Venice.
- Festa del Redentore: Each July the Festa del Redentore is held with a temporary pontoon bridge linking the church to central Venice and a major fireworks display on the night of the feast.
How to Get to Il Redentore #
Il Redentore (the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer) sits on the Giudecca island in Venice. From central Venice (Piazza San Marco/Piazzale Roma) take the vaporetto (water bus) to Giudecca - vaporetto services that run from the San Marco area to Giudecca stop within a short walk of the church. The vaporetto ride from the main islands is only a few minutes.
There is no car access; if arriving by car you must leave it at Piazzale Roma and take a vaporetto or water taxi to Giudecca, then walk a few minutes to the church.
Tips for Visiting Il Redentore #
- Plan for late afternoon/sunset on Giudecca for dramatic views back across the basin to San Marco, and avoid the annual Festa del Redentore if you want a quiet visit.
- Take a vaporetto to Giudecca and disembark at the stop nearest the church-access by water is the practical approach and keeps you out of central Venice crowds.
- Visit outside the festival period to appreciate Palladio's façade and the interior without the crowds; viewing the church from the Giudecca waterfront gives a great composition many day-trippers miss.

Best visited in spring or autumn for milder weather and fewer crowds; July is very busy due to the Festa del Redentore.
