Ikema Island (Ikemajima) is a small island in the Miyako group of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, known for its coastal scenery and reefs. It forms part of the subtropical island chain in the East China Sea.
The island offers quiet beaches, shallow turquoise lagoons and coral-fringed coastline that attract swimmers and snorkellers seeking less-developed reef areas. The road connection to nearby Miyako Island makes it a common half-day or day-trip destination for visitors based on Miyako-jima.
Ikema has been a small, inhabited island within the Miyako archipelago for centuries, with local communities historically reliant on fishing and small-scale agriculture; modern infrastructure development has improved access to tourism. The construction of a bridge to Miyako Island transformed visitor access and local transport.
Located immediately north of Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Ikema is part of the Miyako Islands group and is reachable by road from Miyako-jima.
- Access: The island is linked to Miyako Island by a road bridge, making it accessible by car and enabling short day trips from Miyako Island's main settlements.
What to See #
- Ikema Bridge: A vehicular bridge that provides the island's primary road link to larger Miyako Island, enabling day trips and local traffic access without a ferry.
