Ihlara
Archaeological Site Deep volcanic canyon famed for rock-cut Byzantine churches
A deep volcanic canyon in Cappadocia with a river running its floor and dozens of rock‑cut churches painted with frescoes. Hikers follow the riverside trail between villages and cave chapels.
Ihlara refers to the deep canyon and pilgrimage valley in Aksaray Province in central Turkey, noted for its river-carved gorge and rock-cut churches. The valley became an important monastic centre with numerous carved churches and dwellings.
Hikers follow paths along the Melendiz River through a canyon of roughly 14 kilometres, encountering dozens of rock-cut churches and frescoed chapels carved into the valley walls. The route passes riverside villages where small cafes and restaurants serve visitors and provides a mix of natural scenery and Byzantine-era ecclesiastical architecture. At the downstream end, the large carved complex of Selime Monastery crowns the valley and offers expansive views back along the canyon.
The gorge was used by Christian monks from the Byzantine period onwards, particularly between roughly the 7th and 13th centuries, when monastic communities carved churches and dwellings into the volcanic tuff of the canyon walls and decorated many interiors with frescoes. The area declined as a monastic centre in the later medieval period but has been the subject of archaeological and conservation interest.
The valley sits in the Cappadocia region of central Anatolia, within Aksaray Province, running through rural terrain near the small towns of Ihlara and Güzelyurt and accessible from regional centres in Cappadocia.
- Dimensions: The valley is approximately 14 kilometres long and the canyon walls reach up to about 100 metres in places, making the walking route a substantial hike with many steps.
