Ichaboe Island

Island Small Namibian island famous for seabird colonies

Off Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, Ichaboe Island is known for large seabird colonies and a 19th‑century guano industry; wildlife cruises and birdwatchers visit by boat.

Main image

Ichaboe Island is a small rocky island off the southern coast of Namibia in the ǁKaras Region, notable for rich mid-19th-century guano deposits and important seabird colonies.

A very small, largely bare rock outcrop, it is best known for seabird concentrations and for being visible from coastal boat trips rather than for visitor infrastructure. Viewing is generally from boats or vessels rather than onshore facilities, and the island itself is uninhabited.

The island became internationally prominent during a mid-19th-century guano rush when European and other companies extracted guano deposits intensively. Mining declined later in the 19th century and the island has since been recognized for its wildlife value.

Geographically it sits off Namibia’s southern shoreline in the ǁKaras Region, offshore from the coastal belt near Lüderitz and the Atlantic Ocean seaboard.

  • Access: Boat visits are typically from the mainland; the island is uninhabited and primarily of interest for wildlife viewing rather than facilities.

How to Get to Ichaboe Island #

Ichaboe Island lies offshore from Namibia’s southern coast near Lüderitz and is accessible only by vessel with explicit permission from Namibian authorities. Landing is usually restricted for conservation reasons; nearby Lüderitz is the logistical base for permits and charter arrangements.

Tips for Visiting Ichaboe Island #

  • Obtain permits well in advance if research or bird-survey access is required-Ichaboe is a protected bird sanctuary.
  • Approach only with experienced skippers; strong currents and offshore swell can make landings dangerous.
  • Respect strict wildlife regulations: nesting seabirds are highly sensitive to disturbance.
