Southwest & Reykjavík (Golden Circle)

Midsummer in June means lengthy daylight-near midnight sun conditions-and comfortable touring weather with averages around 10-13°C. This is prime time for hiking, long drives on the Ring Road stretches near Reykjavík, and visiting botanical displays at Viðey or the capital’s parks. Many roads remain mud-free and Highland routes start opening if conditions allow. Crowds increase but nowhere near the heaviest August levels; bring layers for chilly nights.

South Coast & Vatnajökull (Vík, Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón)

June’s long daylight and mild temperatures (roughly 10-13°C) make summer exploration easy: glacier walks, hikes in Skaftafell, and boat trips among the icebergs at Jökulsárlón run frequently. Expect increased visitor numbers and the occasional crowded parking area at major viewpoints, but long daylight stretches allow spreading visits over the day. Bring layered clothing for cold glacier outings and a rainproof shell for sudden downpours.

East Fjords & Southeast (Egilsstaðir, Höfn)

June’s long daylight and generally settled weather are ideal for exploring the winding fjords by car or boat; highs of 10-14°C are common and trails are usually snow-free. Local seafood restaurants in Höfn and Djúpivogur are in full swing, and the late hours allow extended shoreline walks without haste. Highland routes into interior areas open only slowly and unevenly, so coastal itineraries are the best bet.

North Iceland (Akureyri, Mývatn, Húsavík)

June’s near-continuous daylight and comfortable temperatures (often 10-15°C) make the north a summer highlight: Lake Mývatn’s pseudocraters and geothermal areas are pleasant for long hikes, and whale watching is in full swing from Húsavík. This is a great month for multi-day treks and for visiting Dettifoss and Ásbyrgi with little chance of snow. Expect active tourist services; still bring layers for cold mornings and evenings.

Westfjords & Northwest (Ísafjörður, Dynjandi, Hornstrandir)

June’s long daylight and cool, fresh air make the Westfjords ideal for wildlife and birding-puffins and a variety of seabirds are abundant on cliff colonies. Ísafjörður hosts cultural events and local boat tours run reliably; mountain passes into Hornstrandir open for seasonal hiking with organized boats. Expect strong winds on exposed headlands and variable weather; fully waterproof layers and sturdy footwear are essential.

Central Highlands & Interior (Landmannalaugar, Kjölur, Kerlingarfjöll)

June typically marks the practical start of the highland season: F-roads are more likely to be passable with appropriate 4x4 vehicles and Landmannalaugar, Kerlingarfjöll, and the Kjölur route offer extensive hiking. Day temperatures are cool (often 5-10°C) with nights near freezing at higher elevations. River crossings can be swift from snowmelt, so check local river-level reports and consider a guided crossing if unsure.
