Ibo (Mozambique)

Ibo is an island and township in Mozambique’s Quirimbas Archipelago, off the coast of Cabo Delgado Province. It is noted for a compact colonial-era town, historic fortifications and ongoing maritime activities such as fishing and dhow repair.

Visitors come to see the island’s narrow streets, colonial buildings and fort ruins, and to use Ibo as a base for snorkeling, diving and boat trips to other islands in the archipelago. Accommodation is small-scale and tourism is relatively low-key compared with larger resorts.

Portuguese traders and colonial administrators established and fortified settlements in the Quirimbas from the early modern period; Ibo grew as a fortified trading post during centuries of Indian Ocean commerce and colonial rule. The urban fabric today retains masonry buildings and forts reflecting that history.

Ibo sits off the northern Mozambican coast in the Indian Ocean, part of the Quirimbas chain. The island is accessed by boat from the nearby port city of Pemba and from smaller mainland harbours; it lies within Cabo Delgado Province.

• Reach Ibo Island on a scheduled dhow/ferry from Pemba or by the island's occasional light-aircraft services; check timetables and book ahead because connections and seats are limited.
• Stay overnight on Ibo rather than attempting a day-trip from Pemba - overnights let you explore the fort and old town at quieter times when day-tripper crowds have left.
• Take a local guided walk around the Portuguese fort and the historic town - local guides highlight little-known colonial architecture, gravesites and community projects that many visitors miss, and they can arrange short dhow trips to nearby islets.
