Mountains Mountain range in central-eastern Spain
A chain of mountains across central-eastern Spain, the Iberian System features limestone ridges, deep valleys and scattered villages; hikers and birdwatchers use its trails and rocky scenery.
The Iberian System (Sistema Ibérico) is a major mountain range in eastern and central Spain that stretches across several autonomous communities. It forms a significant physical barrier between the Ebro basin to the northeast and central Spain to the southwest.
The range comprises numerous smaller ranges and plateaus composed largely of sedimentary rock, including limestone, and supports a mix of forested slopes and highland grasslands. The mountains are used for pastoral activities, forestry and outdoor recreation such as hiking and climbing.
The system developed through Alpine orogenic processes and displays folded and faulted strata typical of Spain’s interior ranges. Human use has included traditional mountain agriculture and the siting of small towns and villages along valley corridors.
Geographically the Iberian System runs roughly northwest-southeast across inland Spain, crossing regions such as Aragon, Castile-La Mancha and Valencia, with its highest massifs located near the border of Aragon and Castile.
- Highest point: Contains several sub-ranges and limestone massifs with varied elevations; its highest summit is Mount Moncayo at about 2,315 metres.
