Hymettus
Mountain Mount near Athens famed for thyme honey and trails
Close to Athens, Hymettus is a limestone massif known for thyme-covered slopes and historic marble quarries. Hikers visit monasteries, trails and local honey producers.
Hymettus is a limestone mountain range rising to just over 1,000 metres east of central Athens in the Attica region. It forms a prominent natural ridge that bounds the eastern side of the Athens basin.
Trails and forested slopes attract hikers, mountain bikers and people seeking views over Athens and the Saronic Gulf. Several historic monasteries and chapels, including the Kaisariani Monastery, sit on its lower slopes and are common hiking destinations.
The mountain was exploited in antiquity for its marble and for beekeeping; honey from Hymettus was noted in ancient sources. Byzantine and later monastic establishments were founded on its slopes, some of which survive.
Hymettus runs roughly north-south to the east of central Athens and overlooks the Mesogeia plain and parts of the Attica region.
- Honey and thyme: The mountain is traditionally associated with thyme and honey production; local honey from Hymettus has been prized since antiquity.
How to Get to Hymettus #
Mount Hymettus (Ymittos) is immediately east/southeast of central Athens.
