The church is notable for its rare three-aisle (three-nave) stave construction and preserved medieval carpentry details. Visitors can see original timber post-and-beam elements and medieval wall paintings and decorative woodwork that survive inside the building.
Construction was carried out by medieval Norwegian carpenters in the late 12th or early 13th century. The building originally served as a Catholic parish church and became Lutheran after the Reformation; it has undergone conservation and repair work in later centuries to preserve the wooden structure.
