Hydra (island)
Island Greek island known for vehicle-free streets and architecture
Hydra, a Saronic island reachable by ferry from Athens, keeps cars off its narrow streets; visitors come for waterfront cafés, 19th-century stone mansions, island hopping from the Peloponnese and a slow, pedestrian-focused pace.
Hydra is a Saronic Gulf island in the Attica region of Greece notable for its preserved 18th- and 19th-century architecture and a longstanding artist and visitor community. The island is distinguished by its absence of private motor vehicles and by a compact harbour settlement.
The harbor town features stone mansions, narrow cobbled streets and a waterfront lined with cafes and small ports used by fishing boats and yachts. Small bays and rocky beaches around the island are reached by short walks or local water taxis, and the island operates regular ferry connections to Piraeus and nearby islands.
Hydra rose to prominence as a maritime and trading community in the 18th and early 19th centuries and played an active role in the Greek War of Independence with a significant merchant fleet. Many historic homes on the island reflect that period of prosperity.
Hydra lies in the Saronic Gulf roughly southeast of the port of Piraeus and within reach of Athens by regular ferry services, making it a popular short-break destination from the capital.
- No cars: Private motor vehicles are generally prohibited across the island; people move on foot, by donkey or by boat on the shoreline.
- Ferry time: Ferry services from Piraeus take about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on vessel type, making it a common day trip from Athens.
What to See #
- Hydra Town (Chora): The island's main settlement and port, characterised by stone mansions, cobbled lanes and a waterfront lined with cafes and yachts; it is the primary arrival point for ferries from Piraeus and other islands.
- Vlychos: A sheltered bay and small village with seaside tavernas and walking access to nearby coves popular for swimming.
- Kamini: A small fishing quarter west of the main port known for its narrow streets, local restaurants and access to coastal footpaths.

Tips for Visiting Hydra (island) #
- Arrive at Hydra Port (Hydra Town) early in the morning to watch the fishing boats come in and to avoid the day-tripper rush from Athens.
- Leave luggage on the mainland if staying only a day-there are no cars and luggage is carried by donkeys or by hand; many pensions will carry bags from the quay to rooms for a small fee.
- Climb the narrow stone alleys above the harbour at sunset; the light on the white-washed mansions is what made Leonard Cohen move here in 1960.
- Use the central harbor (Hydra Town) ferry dock rather than smaller landings; it's where most hotels and restaurants are clustered and where taxis (water taxis) depart.
