Hvannadalshnúkur

Mountain Iceland's highest peak atop Vatnajökull glacier

The highest peak in Iceland sits atop the Öræfajökull stratovolcano within Vatnajökull National Park; climbers attempt technical ascents and visitors see glacier expanses and volcanic ridgelines.

Main image

Hvannadalshnfakur is the highest peak in Iceland, topping out at about 2,110 metres, and forms part of the Vatnajf6kull ice cap. It is a prominent summit on the rim of the Öre6fajf6kull stratovolcano.

The mountain is glacier-covered and attracts mountaineers and guided parties who approach via glacier routes that cross permanent ice and crevasses. The summit provides broad views over the south-east Vatnajf6kull area when conditions allow, but weather and crevasses make self-guided ascents hazardous.

Hvannadalshnfakur is the volcanic summit of the Öre6fajf6kull massif, a historically active volcano whose largest recorded eruption occurred in the 14th century. The peak has been mapped and climbed in the modern era as Icelands highest point.

The peak sits in southeast Iceland within Vatnajf6kull National Park, in the Öre6fi region of the highlands. The nearest towns on the coast and access points are to the east and south of the glacier region.

  • Elevation: Rises to 2,110 metres above sea level and is the highest point in Iceland, dominated by permanent glacier ice.
  • Climbing conditions: Ascent involves glacier travel and crevasse risk; most climbs are done with qualified guides and appropriate glacial equipment.

How to Get to Hvannadalshnúkur #

Drive east from Reykjavík on Route 1 (the Ring Road) toward Vatnajökull National Park to the Skaftafell area / Öræfi; the drive is about 4-5 hours (roughly 330 km). Park at the Skaftafell/Vatnajökull visitor centre or nearby parking and follow the marked access trails toward the Öræfajökull glacier and Hvannadalshnúkur - the glacier approach begins a short walk from the park parking/trailhead.

Note: the summit requires glacier travel and crevasse rescue skills; ascents are normally done with a licensed glacier guide based in Skaftafell or the nearby towns.

Tips for Visiting Hvannadalshnúkur #

  • Plan summit attempts in summer (late June-August) and aim for early morning departures - weather on Öræfajökull changes fast and mornings give the most stable windows and clearer views.
  • Do not attempt the glacier traverse solo: most visitors access Hvannadalshnúkur via guided glacier hikes operating out of Skaftafell or Höfn - book a certified guide in advance and confirm pickup/meeting points with the operator.
  • If you don't intend to climb, visit the Skaftafell area or viewpoints along the Ring Road for excellent panoramas of Hvannadalshnúkur and Öræfajökull without committing to a technical ascent; these spots are easier to reach and less weather-dependent.

For Hvannadalshnúkur, visit in summer (June-August) when weather and daylight are most favorable for climbs and glacier travel.

Summer (best time)
June-August · 0 to 10 °C (at lower elevations; summit usually below freezing)
Relatively milder weather and longer daylight make summit approaches and glacier travel most feasible; conditions can still be cold and changeable, so guided trips and proper gear are essential.
Shoulder seasons
May, September-October · around -5 to 5 °C (summit often below freezing)
Weather becomes more unpredictable with increasing snow and ice; routes may be more technical and access limited by conditions.
